Long time missed Umunhum is back! According to Will “The Walking Wikipedia” von Kaenel, if Hicks North is counted, it becomes the second toughest climb in the US after Powder Mountain in Utah!
The weather is going to be perfect! There’s no water in MidPen, or anywhere between Los Gatos and New Almaden, which will be 42km/26mi and at least 2-1/2 hours into our ride. Start out hydrated, and bring at least two 750 ml bottles.
Note as well that the descent is really demanding. It includes -10% grade for 5 miles. We’ve had heat flats before. The road is steep and narrow. Please concentrate on safety descending. It’s wise to go slower than you’re capable. Regroups
-
Don’t regroup at bottom of Hicks South, rather, head onto the New Almaden Quicksilver Park where there’s water and bathroom.
-
Note after IBM we regroup as we turn right onto Golf Course Lane (not Santa Teresa, because there’s a lot of gunk in the road, and it’s a stretch we can avoid).
-
Ultimate regroup’s at McKean and Harry Road.
