LGBRC Saturday Ride 11/13: Mt Winery, Hwy 9, Alpine, 84/WOLH, Portola Valley
Elevation gain: 2,053m/6,736ft
Estimated elapsed time: 4hr:30min
Looking for something a little different, but sort of the same.
We’ll start up Hwy 9, which is always fair game for Team Red start at Peet’s, for convenience of more northerly members. (The different starts are Peet’s Homestead (Team Red), and the usual Los Gatos start (Team Black). The routes converge on Mountain Winery atop Pierce.
After climbing 9, we’ll take Skyline to Alpine, quick regroup at Alpine then descend all the way to Pescadero Road. Now for something different. We’ll climb Hwy 84 to WOLH. Climbing WOLH has not been done for a club ride and while it’s short, it’s one of the more beautiful climbs.
Then we head to the Skywood Trading Post for water and refuel. After that, it’s down Hwy 84, right into Portola Valley, and home via Arastradero, Purissima, around behind the Los Altos Country Club and back via Foothill to the Saratoga Maze. It’s mostly the same course that we do in the mornings when going to Page Mill, but in reverse.
This will be one of our longer rides. Strava clocks in at 68mls, with 6,600ft of climbing. Expect 4h15m-4h30m ride time. With stops/regroups we should be back by 1:30-1:45pm.
There are options to splinter off at Alpine/Skyline by heading down Page Mill or continuing on Skyline, but we hope everyone continues for the WOLH treat.
Regroups and Rest Stops
1) Mt Winery
2) Alpine (don’t stop at the top of Hwy 9)
3) Rolling regroup on Pescadero Rd.
4) Skywood Trading Post (refuel)
5) From there we should be together all the way back. If we need one more water stop, there are plenty of choices like Peet’s at Foothill/Homestead.
